Opening Ceremonies Ends With A Bang

Tue Oct 04, 2016

The Huntsman World Senior Games Opening Ceremonies ended with a bang on Tuesday night, the bang of fireworks and the enthusiasm of an inspired crowd. The evening began with the Parade of Athletes with thousands of competitors from around the world making their way into Legend Solar Stadium at Dixie State University.

Once they were all seated the show began with incredible musical numbers including a "love letter" to the participants consisting of a medley of favorite songs about love. The music and dancing continued, climaxing with a tribute to the 80s mega-hit "We Are The World."

Mayor John Pike welcomed the athletes to St. George and Karen Huntsman encouraged them to stay active and to get their cancer screenings each year on their birthday. Three-time Olympic medalist, Debbie Meyer, also encouraged the audience to be dedicated and follow their passion.

The night ended with the lighting of the brand new Huntsman World Senior Games cauldron (even though a technical issue caused it to light a little late), which led into an amazing aerial fireworks display.
