Attendees of this year’s Huntsman World Senior Games Concert & Celebration, held on Tuesday, October 16 at the Dixie State College Burns Arena are in for a real treat. This celebratory event is free to the public. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the show begins at 7:00 p.m. The headlining act is a cappella sensation, Voice Male.

Voice MaleVoice Male is made up of some very different individuals who somehow found each other over 16 years ago. The group, a six-man contemporary a cappella troupe based in Utah, performs covers of contemporary popular songs as well as traditional and spiritual music. They even have a few original songs they throw in the mix for fun.

Voice Male formed at Utah State University in 1994 originally as a nine-man group. Vocal percussionist and sometimes-bass-singer, John Luthy came up with the Voice Male concept while singing with some of the guys in the Logan LDS Institute Choir.

“We sang anything we could get our hands on, and anywhere we could find a group of people who would listen, ” joked Luthy. “You might have recognized us from such events as Timmy’s 3rd birthday party or the 4th Ward LDS Relief Society social.”

Over the next two years several members of the group left, and replacements were auditioned. As time passed and interests changed or people graduated and moved in different directions, others moved on from the group as well, ultimately leaving Voice Male with six members. At this point, they decided to keep the number at six and see where singing could take them. And take them places it did.
From humble beginnings the group expanded their reach further and further, traveling to several states and even to Mexico, performing over 120 different songs for thousands of fans.

Voice Male was the winner of the holiday album category in the 1999 Contemporary A Cappella Society for “Jingles”, runner up in the 2001 awards in the cover/pop song category for “Light in Your Eyes” from “Hooked”, runner up in the 2006 awards in the holiday album category for “Jingles 2,” as well as the holiday song category for “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.”

Over the years, all six graduated, married and started families. They even got day jobs, ranging from Computer Networking to Real Estate to Law, but singing and performing is still a major part of their lives.

In 2010, the group bid a sad farewell to one of their own, Phil Kesler, who fought a courageous battle with metastatic colorectal cancer for the three years before passing peacefully from this life into the next.

The remaining members decided to honor Phil’s wish that Voice Male continue on.

After an extensive search, Rick Murdock was officially added as a new member in 2011.

When they are not working or singing, they are enjoying time with their supportive wives and children. The latest tally: 23 children who like to call each other Voice Male Cousins. Who knows what is in store for the future of Voice Male.

“Whatever the future holds for Voice Male doesn’t really matter,” said Luthy, “Because the past has been pretty great.”
